First Health Blog Post For The Year!

For Health so far this term, our class has been learning about Taha Wairua or Spiritual Wellbeing. As a part of the Wellbeing unit, Taha Wairua is one of the essential walls in the Whare of wellbeing.

What is the Whare Tapa Wha?
Whare Tapa Wha is your general wellbeing. The four main pillars or walls of wellbeing are Taha Tinana (Physical Wellbeing), Taha Hinengaro (Mental and emotional wellbeing), Taha Wairua (Spiritual Wellbeing), and Taha Whanau (Social wellbeing). If one of these dimensions of health collapses, then the house will fall. The Whare is sort of a metaphor for a persons wellbeing if one of the dimensions of wellbeing collapses, so does the person.

Taha Wairua
Taha Wairua is Spiritual wellbeing. Many people associate spirituality with religion, but it is much more than that. It is important for people to explore what they believe in and what their values are. Keeping spiritual wellbeing in check can involve activities such as meditation, prayer, and even practising religion. Spiritual wellbeing can be linked to personal values, beliefs etc.

Our First Task
For our first task, we had to write down who we are as a person, on an identity poster. I found this task a bit hard because it's a bit hard to name who you are and describe who you are as a person. I made my Poster fairly simple, with just a few words that people use to describe who I am. Using two colours, I made my poster look pretty and looking neat and tidy! Almost everyone in our class calls me Mum, so I just put it down on my poster, just to clarify.

Personal Values Assesment
After completing our posters, we took a personal values assessment. Using this link we each took a personal values assessment. After a series of questions, the website determined our values. Once we received our results, we looked at our results about us as a person, and then based on these results, made a table about two of these values. The two values or attributes I chose were reliability and wisdom. These two values are quite important to me as they make me who I am. On the screenshot to the right, I have my values and how they make me, well me!

Final Reflection blog post for Narrative Writing task Matrix

For English, our latest unit has been narrative writing. Using a task matrix, we had tasks to complete each lesson. Learning about narrative writing has been really interesting because I have had a chance to improve my skills with writing itself. I have learned heaps about showing and not telling. Show not tell is a technique used in mainly narrative writing to describe the events happening. Instead of telling them what's happening, you describe what's happening. Using this technique has improved my writing because I am finding myself using more and more interesting language.

What has been my favourite part?
My favourite part has been learning about show, not tell. Throughout this unit, I have seen my writing skills grow and improve! Show, not tell has made my writing more interesting and actually seems to have great hooks. This part is my favourite because it has grown my English skills as a whole.

What style of learning work best for you?
In English, I prefer to write on my own. This is because creativity, especially in writing, is easier for me if I do work alone. Being creative takes a lot of focus and being focused is very hard if there are other people distracting you. So working alone seems to be the option I prefer.

I really enjoyed working on this unit. Using your creativity to create something amazing is so enjoyable. I like writing very dark stories, so this unit has helped me extend my skills on doing that.

Here is my google slide with my completed tasks.

S.E.E.L paragraph about Child labour

Why are children used in labour and how does this take away their human rights and freedom?
According to basic Human Rights, everyone has to rights to freedom, and not enslaved. Child labour is practised in many countries such as Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan etc. Children that live in poverty, children who are poor and living in the slums most commonly have many debts. To pay these debts off, the children are sold and bought by Human Traffickers. Most of these children are growing up without an education because they are working all the time for their masters. Due to being so young and naive, children are easily manipulated and targeted for work. Jobs that these children around the world are doing are work in the mines, carpet factories and brick making stations. Most of the time these workplaces are very hazardous and these jobs are not good for the children at all. Without this freedom, these children's human rights are being violated. They have lost their right to be free.

10 Worst Countries for child labour

This is a map I created is about the 10 worst countries for child labour. In Social Studies, child labour is our latest topic. The pins that are seen in the map shows where child labour is still practised and even legal.

Are we gonna have a problem? Music Assessment

1. Who am I working with?
I am working with Jaime and Sam!

2. What type of performing arts are you doing?
We are doing Musical Theatre! One of our favourite genres of movie and music.

3. What song/theme are you going to use and why?
We are singing/performing Candy Store from Heather's the Musical. We decided to do this song because it had more of an edgier feel than our first ideas did. It also had some awesome choreography and amazing harmonies that our trio would be great at! After listening to the soundtrack, this is what we came up with.

4. What is our first step?
Our first step is to learn all of the lyrics and dialogue, this shouldn't be too hard because once you hear the lyrics, you can't et them out of your head!

Here is the link to a clip that inspired us to perform this song!!!

Who was Harriet Tubman?

Image result for harriet tubmanHere is my mindmap about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. In Social Studies, we have been learning about Human Rights and have branched off onto Slavery for one of our main topics. Learning about Harriet Tubman has been interesting since her selfless acts have made an amazing impact on the world and have changed peoples views and lives.

Harriet Tubman was an important conductor in the underground railroad. Slave turned abolitionist, born as "Araminta Ross", Harriet Tubman freed many slaves using her influence on others and the Underground Railroad. Like many slaves, Harriet had a very rough childhood. Being beaten by her master and suffering from a head injury in her teens had made a huge impact on Harriet. In a famous quote Harriet says "I freed a thousand slaves, I could have saved a thousand more, if only they knew they were slaves". This quote truly shows how humble Harriet was and how she wishes that she could've done more. Even though she did the amazing job of saving many slaves, she wishes that she could've saved more, but she was unable to because they didn't think of themselves as slaves.

In 1844, she married a free slave called John Tubman. When Harriet asked John about escaping to go to Philadelphia, he broke up with her, and then he married a second time to another woman. After Harriet escaped to Philadelphia, she then became a conductor for the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a network that slaves used to escape, and that guiding slaves up North to freedom. Once she was free, Harriet then made 19 trips to save other slaves. She influenced many and saved many. She saved many of her relatives as well.

Most slaves dates of birth were not recorded, so Harriet's exact date of birth is unknown. But Harriet's date of birth is thought to be between 1820 and 1825. Harriet sadly passed away in 1913 due to pneumonia in March. She is buried in Fort Hill Cemetary with Military honours.

What did I find interesting?
I really enjoyed learning about Harriet Tubman. She was a very influential woman in history and her work among many others should be appreciated more. I found how the Underground Railroad worked really interesting, and the impact it made on peoples lives.

What did I already know?
I didn't really know who Harriet Tubman was at the start. I had some idea about slavery concepts, but  I have learned a lot about it now.

What I want to learn
I really want to find out how accurate slavery is portrayed in movies. The silver screen can sometimes mellow down occurrences for obvious reasons but I would like to find out how accurate they really are. Also, I would like to learn more about modern slavery.

Why is Harriet Tubman so important?
She did so many amazing things for slaves everywhere. She freed many people and changed their mindsets about slavery. She was truly an amazing woman and deserves more recognition around the world.
