Making da salts

For our last experiment for the Acids and Bases, we are going to be making salts.

Aim:
To produce copper sulfate salt by reacting copper oxide with an acid.

Equipment:

  •  Copper oxide powder
  •  Dilute sulfuric acid
  • 50ml measuring cylinder
  • 2 100mL beakers
  • Bunsen burner
  • Tripod
  • Gauze mat
  • Funnel
  • Filter paper
  • Thermometer
  • Spatula
  • Evaporating Basin
  • Stirring rod
Method:
1. Add 20mL of Sulfuric acid to a 100mL beaker. Heat the acid until it reaches 70degrees celsius. Turn off your bunsen burner.

2. Once heated, use a spatula to add a pea-sized portion of copper oxide to the beaker. Stir the mixture for 30seconds.

3. Repeat step 2 until no more will dissolve. Allow beaker to cool.

4. Fold the filter paper and place it into the funnel. Place the filter funnel into the second beaker.

5. Make sure the beaker is cool enough to hold at the top. The contents should still be hot.

6. Gently swirl the contents of the beaker to mix and then pour into the filter paper in the funnel. Allow filtering through.

7. Rinse the beaker you used to heat the mixture previously, and place it back to the top of the tripod filled with 50-60mLs of water.

8. Place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker and carefully pour some of the solutions from the beaker into the evaporating basin.

9. Gently heat the beaker until the solution in the evaporating basin has reduced by half.

10. Leave the evaporating basin to cool, once cool, move the evaporating basin to a warm place where it will not be disturbed, and observe over the next few days. Blue copper Sulfate crystals should form.

Results:
We were able to create the kinda create the salt we desired.  Our experiment was destroyed by another classes student, this is the results of their experiment.

However, on Monday this should be redone with the experiment that is being recreated.

Discussion:

During the experiment, we were able to recreate the original. The acid in the sulfuric acid was combined with the copper oxide powder and triggered a chemical reaction which created the copper sulfate salt. While in the earlier parts in the experiment, if you did it yourself, you would have noticed that it was a complete liquid until when you next checked up on it after some time. By when you looked at it, it would have crystalized. This is simply because after evaporating the water molecules only the copper sulfate salt was left.

Conclusion:

We don't currently have a conclusion of whether the experiment worked or not. However, we can report that we followed all the instructions to a tee. This post and my other classmates will be later on updated with the results of the experiments.

SEXXY Paragraph part 2

Here is a SEXXY paragraph that I have written by myself about this scene from the movie The Power Of One.

Facial expression is a very essential part of any movie, especially in the scene where Geel Piet is killed. In this particular scene, Geel Piet is being pinned against a wall by Sergeant Borman who is holding a baton against his neck. Geel Piet’s face has a very scared facial expression, the face of a man who is close to giving up. His eyes, fluttering, almost closed. His mouth slightly open while speaking his last words, contrasting to Sergeant Borman’s face who is very confident and intimidating, his eyes drawing you in, vicious eyes that could slice you in half. The director, John Avildsen, wanted these particular facial expressions to draw attention to the emotions that both of these characters are feeling. Without these facial expressions, the scene would be very boring and the audience would not be able to interpret their emotions. Avildsen wanted Geel Piet to have a very scared, intimidated face, as this is what anyone would look like if they were in this position. Geel Piet’s expressions can be juxtaposed to Sergeant Borman’s expression, which is very intimidating, the face of a killer, the face that would kill many. The audience is made to feel worried and scared for Geel Piet’s welfare. Geel Piet is a very lovable character, so seeing him in danger is very sad for the audience. This made the audience think that Geel Piet and many others would soon die. The aspect of expression in this scene can be compared to the expressions made by PK in another scene where he is also beaten by Sergeant Borman. The expression of fear, shock, and horror all combined into one are similar to the faces expressed by Geel Piet in this scene.

Power of one SEXXY Paragraph

In English, our class has been learning about the SEXXY paragraph structure for essays. After learning about the structure, our class wrote a SEXXY paragraph about this scene from the movie The Power of One directed by John Avidlsen. Chloe, Molly and I worked on this together in class.

The long shot is common throughout the film. Including this shot of Sergent Borman's legs while in the prison. In the foreground, we see the guards legs and baton while in the background we see PK and Geel Piet talking. The director, John Avildsen, used a long shot for this scene showcasing Sergent Borman's baton to make you believe that something may happen to Geel Piet. It is also to show the guard is in a high position of power. The audience also feels a sense of worry for Geel Piet, as we believe that something may happen, based on the stance of Sergent Boram. The audience is made to feel worried and empathetic for all of the characters in this shot. Where Geel Piet gets beaten to death, there is a strong similarity to this scene that we have mentioned. This can be contrasted to another scene were you see Sergent Borman's legs and the baton with Geel Piet at the Sergent's feet, almost foreshadowing the scene that came before it.

Social Studies Creative Writing Migration story first draft

New Zealand seemed to be paradise, the way that the Admiral spoke of the faraway land truly entranced me into leaving this dump. Through the thick, black fog, I could barely see the advertisement for the distant land. From what I could see, it spoke of wondrous opportunity, more jobs, especially Blacksmith Jobs.

Here at home in England, I spent extensive hours pounding steel into fine armor and swords for the noble knights that protect this land. But jobs here are scarce. After the employment of the Royal Blacksmith, armor is no longer needed to be made. My fine horseshoes and weapons were now made by that bloody Royal Blacksmith. The countless hours I spent meant nothing, the hours I spent pounding that steel into weapons that would slash heads and cave brains into throats of many no longer meant anything. New Zealand looked to be a place of happiness and opportunity, nothing like this shithole.

The thought of leaving England hit me like a ton of bricks. Not even the burning fire of my furnace would stop me like the thought of leaving home. What would happen to my shop? What rats would infest it? Which people would reside in it? Family wasn't an issue, I've got none left. But my poor shop, it's the only thing I had going for myself, the only thing that kept me afloat. England may be a dump. but it's home. The faces of children covered in shit, to remain there till it crumbles off like the distant dreams of children flowing away.

The vessel was an incredible sight for sore eyes. Large and intimidating, the ship looked like it could carry many, many animals of this earth in its hull alone.

"Name"
A large, bearded man with paper grumbled as he stood in front of the steps.
"Alec Culloden sir"
I mumbled anticipating his answer.
"Ah yes, the Blacksmith, you'll be in this group, group three"
The thick scent of tobacco filled my nose when those words left his lips.
"How old are you young man?"
"26 sir, I want to start anew in this wondrous land"

We were promised a new start when we got on the ship. Many young men piled into the hull of the ship. Some forced on top of each other. Others needed to leave their loved ones and children in order to go on this trip. Good thing I had no family, no one to hold, no one to hold me. The stench of England followed us on our voyage. Rotten fish and cat urine could be smelt from a million miles away. There were some young men rocking back and forth hugging their knees, no space, hardly any food and the addition of rats scurrying around made this all ten times worse. The men from the church wanted to start a church choir. They spent all their time harmonizing and creating melodies to keep themselves entertained and to keep spirits up. I decided to join in on this, apparently, my raspy voice did some good. Months went by, and we were still on this ship, some gave up, but I soldiered on, this new life and opportunity were what I strived for.

Many months went by and we finally arrived in New Zealand. My legs, barely able to keep me upright, struggled and slowly took me to the steps of the ship. Many trees and little ships took over all of the lands. The glimmering of the Tuscany sea shone with the reflection of the sky and the sun. My own hut was quite small with all of the tools necessary for Blacksmithing. But something seemed off, I'm not sure if it was the copper-skinned men or the English pointing guns at them. The indigenous people of New Zealand spoke a different tongue to us, a language no one seemed to understand. The English didn't care, they just pulled their triggers. Loud bangs filled the air, a sound most of us were quite familiar with, but the copper people did not like this sound, they all ran and hid in the bushes. This wasn't the life I wanted, scaring the native people of this land, this wasn't how it was supposed to happen. I was going to live my best life. I wanted to go home, but then I realized, the amazing scenery. This place truly looked beautiful. New Zealand was the paradise I dreamed of every night, the place I was now to call home.

Focused Listening

Hello by Adele
What instruments do you hear?
Piano, Voice, Drums and some sort of Guitar, maybe a bass?

How would you describe the singer's voice?
Her voice is slow and deep. It has a really nice depth to it. Strong, powerful very raw and not too forced, it's natural. Really nice vibrato.

What kind of feel does this song have?
This song has an emotional feel to it, very raw emotions and kind of sad. Seems like a song you would listen to after a heartbreak while stuffing chocolate in your face. Very powerful while also being soft and emotional.

Hello by Adele: Reggae style
What instruments do you hear?
Drums, Bongos, Steelpan? Guitar, vocals

How would you describe the singer's voice?
The voices sound raspy, but strong, with a nice amount of force. Honestly, it sounds sort of autotuned and somewhat synthetic, the harmonies sound fake-ish. The accent used in most reggae songs is quite similar to the ones used in this cover of the song.

What kind of feel does this song have?
This cover of this song is very different. The reggae vibe kind of took away the true authentic meaning to this song. The happy sort of vibe took away from what Adele wrote and the intentions of the songs. When you listen to Adeles version, you can hear the raw emotions and the true meaning of what the song is. This reggae version took away from it. When you here the reggae version, the beat is what you listen to, not the meaningful lyrics that are true and emotional.

Get Smart by the Melbourne Ska Orchestra
What instrument can you hear?
Trumpets, Sax, Drums, Keyboard, Guitar, Steelpan, Clarinet, Trombone, Ukelele,

Which instruments play a solo?
Trumpet, Sax, Steelpan thing, Trombone,

How many people are in the group?
Too many to count, but I estimate around 50 or so I don't know?

What's the difference between Ska and Reggae
Ska is more complex than Reggae. Although it contains some similar elements and instruments, Reggae has more of a relaxed feel and isn't as calm. Ska is more precise and more "Put together" in a certain order, while Reggae is more simple and loose. They do share some similarities.

Do you like this song?
Wild World by Maxi Priest
I do like this song...

  • I like the use of Saxophone, one of my favourite instruments.
  • It has a really interesting beat like it has a Reggae feel but at the same time, it has a pop-ish feel to me.
  • It sounds like something I would listen to when I'm trying to relax, or doing homework. I don't really listen to Reggae type songs, but I like this one.
