Focused Listening

Hello by Adele
What instruments do you hear?
Piano, Voice, Drums and some sort of Guitar, maybe a bass?

How would you describe the singer's voice?
Her voice is slow and deep. It has a really nice depth to it. Strong, powerful very raw and not too forced, it's natural. Really nice vibrato.

What kind of feel does this song have?
This song has an emotional feel to it, very raw emotions and kind of sad. Seems like a song you would listen to after a heartbreak while stuffing chocolate in your face. Very powerful while also being soft and emotional.

Hello by Adele: Reggae style
What instruments do you hear?
Drums, Bongos, Steelpan? Guitar, vocals

How would you describe the singer's voice?
The voices sound raspy, but strong, with a nice amount of force. Honestly, it sounds sort of autotuned and somewhat synthetic, the harmonies sound fake-ish. The accent used in most reggae songs is quite similar to the ones used in this cover of the song.

What kind of feel does this song have?
This cover of this song is very different. The reggae vibe kind of took away the true authentic meaning to this song. The happy sort of vibe took away from what Adele wrote and the intentions of the songs. When you listen to Adeles version, you can hear the raw emotions and the true meaning of what the song is. This reggae version took away from it. When you here the reggae version, the beat is what you listen to, not the meaningful lyrics that are true and emotional.

Get Smart by the Melbourne Ska Orchestra
What instrument can you hear?
Trumpets, Sax, Drums, Keyboard, Guitar, Steelpan, Clarinet, Trombone, Ukelele,

Which instruments play a solo?
Trumpet, Sax, Steelpan thing, Trombone,

How many people are in the group?
Too many to count, but I estimate around 50 or so I don't know?

What's the difference between Ska and Reggae
Ska is more complex than Reggae. Although it contains some similar elements and instruments, Reggae has more of a relaxed feel and isn't as calm. Ska is more precise and more "Put together" in a certain order, while Reggae is more simple and loose. They do share some similarities.

Do you like this song?
Wild World by Maxi Priest
I do like this song...

  • I like the use of Saxophone, one of my favourite instruments.
  • It has a really interesting beat like it has a Reggae feel but at the same time, it has a pop-ish feel to me.
  • It sounds like something I would listen to when I'm trying to relax, or doing homework. I don't really listen to Reggae type songs, but I like this one.
