Distillation of coke (the drink)

Aim: The aim of our experiment was to get pure water from coke.

Method: We set up the equipment like this.

This is our set up for the conical flask. It had around 50mls of coke in it. We had the Bunsen burner set up, we also had a gauze mat underneath the flask. We filled up a conical flask with 50mls of coke and had a delivery tube going from it to another boiling tube inside some icy cold water.

For the water we had a beaker full of it with some ice. This was going to melt potentially. There was a boiling tube inside of it.
Observations: In the conical flask you could see the volume of the coke decrease due to the water evaporating. In the boiling tube you could see fairly clear water.

Reflection on this ongoing process called drama

"Lets do the time warp again"
Our class piece from the Rocky Horror Picture show...
I get to play Magenta, I am so happy

For the past weeks in drama, we have been working on our class piece. Our class is doing the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture show. This is a really funny musical that I happen to love. I have a "special part". I get to play the part of Magenta, she is a maid/ servant in the castle. I was really excited to find out I got this part. I like playing dark characters very much. Our class is starting to do some choreography from the just dance version and some of the original version from the movie.

The original lady who played Magenta is called Patricia Quinn. I think that she did a great job, I aspire to do the same job in our class piece. One thing I really hope to have in our performance is costumes, at least for the main characters. This would show some distinction from the others in the class.

The strength that I have in this class piece is the words. I know all of the words to the Time Warp inside out. I have been spending most of my spare time learning all of the words. I know all of the ques. It has been fun dancing and listening to this song because it is from a musical I love. \

The other main characters in my class are Molly and Jessica. Molly is playing the Criminologist, the instructor. This person yells out most of the dance moves. It's also a chance for Molly to put herself out there. Jessica is playing Columbia, a groupie. She has a high-ish voice. This is quite a fun character. She has a tap dancing solo. I think that Jessica is a great pick for this character.

The Rocky Horror Picture show is such a fun musical. Sometimes at the real performances, they have some audience members yell out lines. They include the audience and that would be a really fun experience. I think our class would do quite well with the time warp. The Rocky Horror Picture show is weird, exciting, loud, funny, different and extravagant.

Filtering dirty water

In science we had to come up with a way to filter water with only a limited equipment. We were also in a group of four, my group was Molly, Ryan, Kiera and I. We put a cloth in the first funnel and then filter paper in the next two. All of this then pours the water into the conical flask at the bottom. the only problem is that the mud just kind of sits at the top  and it  gets clogged with mud. Our water was a bit short from clear but it was fine I guess. I wouldn't drink it though. By the way, it was Ryans idea to put the funnels on that angle, not mine.

Dilutions from a dizzolved crystal

For science last week, we diluted a potassium permanganate crystal in water.  We are learning about dilution and dissolving. To do this we used a measuring cylinder to measure out all of our water. We only got a small amount of the crystal as we were going to use the same water and some extra water to show how it dissolves. From the photo I took, you can tell that the first tube has the most concentrated liquid while the last tube has the most diluted. This is because of the process of dilution. I this photo, you can see that every time, the liquid is more diluted! I like that the process is shown in this photo.

.
For this experiment, we first mixed in a small amount of Potassium Permanganate with approximatley 100 millilitre's of water. We then added 9 millilitres of this solution into a test tube, and added 1 millilitre of water. After this we proceeded to repeat the process of taking 1 millilitre of the last solution into the next test tube and add 9 millilitres of water. In the diagram below, it shows our results and how the solution looked after being diluted each time

Test tub 1 was the most concentrated solution because it contains the largest amount of solute.  Number 6 was the diluted one because it had contained the smallest amount of solute than other test tubes.

"Guess who knows maths"? Snazzy ways to blow your mind

Introduction
Hello friends, it's Nadia here, welcome back to my blog. Today I will share a infographic about Decimals, Percentages and fractions. Now since you've seen the words decimals, percentages and fractions, I bet you will leave this blog post immediately, but don't this isn't any blog post about maths. This will actually teach you something (no shade thrown).  This will inform you about real life problems and maths, this will help you through the struggles of figuring out how much you will have to pay for that really sweet t-shirt from the Warehouse.

Digital learning object
The website that I have used to create my infographic is called venngage. I used this to create 4 different infographics that have some information about Fractions, Decimals and percentages. I have a link here for you.... Snazzy Infographic I totally recommend using venngage if you want a unique way to show your work. Here is a sneaky photo of one of the infographics...

Reflection
-What did you find hard about this assignment-
Doing this assignment has taught me how to convert decimals, fractions and percentages. This information will be easy for me to remember since I can go back and look at it if I forget. The part that I found hard was figuring out examples on the conversions.

- Do you think that you have learnt anything for this assignment-
I learnt how to convert decimals, percentages and fractions. Since I have made these infographics, I can now look back at my work and be proud about what I have done. I also learnt how to use vennage. This infographic maker is easy to use and I got used to it easily.

- What mistake did you make that made you learn something-
The mistake that I made was not using examples to get my point across. But the in the next lesson, I changed this. This taught me that it is hard to find examples for things, it also taught me how to create some. I used some of the examples off of maths is fun.

- What will you do to improve your work-
To improve my work, I will use more examples in my explanation's. But I think I could also explain what decimals are more. When you look at my infographics, you will notice that I didn't exactly explain decimals in the best way. But I think that I did okay with my prior knowledge about decimals.

- What did you not like about this assignment-
The thing that I don't like about this assignment is my fault but I didn't like how I changed my option last minute. At first I was going to do a storybird. But I found it hard to come up with a story that included the percentages, decimals and fractions. I couldn't do that so I changed my option, I just wished that I did venngage from the start. Cause if I did, I  would have more time to include more information.

- What do you think about your infographic-
I think that my infographic is pretty good. But I think that I could improve a few more things. I think that it is good though. It took me quite a while, and I am proud I got this much done in this amount of time.

Question/ Sending off message
I hope you enjoyed reading this blogpost. If you liked reading it and have any questions I ask you to write them below so they can be answered. My question for you is... Would you use venngage and did I teach you anything new today?

Oh crap it's a 20 minute writing challenge

"I didn't mean to kill her", father shrieked as the police brutally punched his now lifeless body. We all knew it was coming. Father might have seemed a kind enough man, but you can never really tell; at least not with everyone.

Father would always do the same thing everyday, he would, get up go to work, come home and go to bed. That was his routine, but we never knew what he did on the weekends. We knew he grew up with no one, our mother left him, so he really had no one to laugh with, or so we thought.

Tellula was fathers assistant and a psychotic maniac. She followed him everywhere! We never knew why she stuck for dinner and bought us presents. Little did we know that these presents and late night dinners with father were all part of her plan to bring devastation upon the whole earth. Tallula was nice enough, she wasn't born the way we were. She was born into a rich family from England, while we were born into a poor family in the Caribbean Islands, on the streets until father found us.

Tamika was my sister; that was until Tellula did something about it.  As the slyly walked across the corridor of our house, the eyes in the painting followed her as if they knew the sinful task she was about to undertake. She slid her hand onto the silver doorknob, turning it to the right. The door swooshed open to reveal Tamika, innocently doing her homework. When Tallula struck her with a knife and cantankerously and brutally murdered my older sister. I saw the whole thing, I knew this was happening all along, Tallula was evil, she never cared, those presents were just signs of a psychotic maniac.

But one thing I still don't understand... why did the police brutally abuse my father if he was an innocent man?

Behaviour strategies: How to be Assertive

- Strategies for being Assertive -

1. Know your priorities: Your priorities are what is important to you. For example, a priority you might have may be school. Not knowing your priorities can stop you from being confident.

2. Eye contact: Eye contact is important so people know that you are listening and taking in what they are saying. You need to look in the other persons eye to show that you are interested.

3. Body language: Body language is important because it lets people know how you are feeling. For example, if you have your arms folded, this shows that you are closed in. Posture can show if you aren't confident. Having your shoulders back, chest out and a smile on your face can show that you are confident in your self, your beliefs and what your saying.

4. Voice: the tone of your voice can show how you are feeling, if you are yelling, this shows that you are angry.

5. "I" statements: I statements are a way that you can express yourself. For example, "I feel that we haven't been talking to each other as much so I was just wondering if there is a problem between us that we need to sort out". If you say "you" it makes the other person more aggressive. It can make the person retaliate a whole lot and make the situation worse.

6. Small victories: These are some things that can show confidence. Having some small victories can make you feel confidence as well. It can make you feel more good about yourself. You can hs

Let's do the time warp again- Drama

For Drama, our class is doing the time warp for our class drama performance and it is going quite well. We are learning the dance moves and it is going very well. I would like to play the part of Magenta, she has quite a few lines. She is different from any characters I have played but I think I would do quite well. Magenta is one of the castles maids. She has a low kind of voice, that I think I could do.

Social studies: Family traditions

FAMILY TRADITIONS

Since school started, in Social Studies our class has been exploring our different cultures and backgrounds. Personally, I am half Asian and half European. My mother and her family are from Malaysia, and my father and his family are mainly from Europe and New Zealand. Since I am Muslim, our family has quite a few traditions, but there are some that most people celebrate in New Zealand but we aren't actually supposed to celebrate. Yesterday in class, everyone in our class wrote some traditions and clothes that they have, we also wrote some food and drinks that they may have. Here is my list of traditions, clothes and food and drinks that my family has.

Ramadan
Image result for ramadanRamadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to celebrate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. The fast is supposed to bring the faithful closer to Allah (God) and to remind them of the suffering and the less fortunate. Fasting is supposed to be physically and spiritually detoxifying, it can also help break habits like smoking, morning coffee and midday snacking. To prepare for the fast, Muslims eat Suhoor, which is a pre-dawn meal of power foods to get them through the day. At the end of the day, at sunset, Muslims break their fast like the Prophet Muhammad did, with a sip of water and some dates.  But there are also some exceptions for particular people...  there are exceptions for children, the elderly, the sick, women who are pregnant or menstruating and people travelling, which could include athletes during tournaments.

Eid al-Fitr or Hari Raya is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. What our family does is go to our relatives and friends houses throughout the week to celebrate. We all gather and eat basically. Since most of us had spent a whole month fasting, we have a massive meal that everyone eats. We eat curries, rice, chicken, all sorts of things. This goes throughout the week. At the end of each Hari Raya celebrations, the children all get money! This can sometimes be a reward for the children that have fasted during Ramadan.

Baju Kurung
Baju Kurung is a traditional Malay Costume which is the national dress of Malaysia. Baju Kurung is typically loose fitting. It is a full length dress, made up of a skirt and blouse. It is made from a long cloth with a folding thing on one side. The blouse is collarless with long sleeves. Sometimes these can be made of silk! The girls in our family wear Baju Kurung on Hari Raya. There is also a men's version of Baju Kurung as well. The Baju Melayu is a loosely fitted shirt with long sleeves, worn with long pants with a sampin. Sampin is the cloth worn on the belly area covering up to the knees or slightly below, or the mid area of the body. Sampin is worn with Baju Melayu, the traditional clothes for Malay men.

FOOD
There are a lot of foods that my family eat, but here are two of my favourites,
Image result for Nasi lemak

NASI LEMAK: Nasi Lemak is a Malay Dish which is served in a Pandan leaf. Sometimes, Nasi Lemak can be different. It really depends where you get it! But the one that I have consists of... Coconut rice, fried chicken, sambal (chilli paste), fried anchovies, boiled egg, cucumbers and roasted peanuts. Nasi Lemak is seen as the National dish of Malaysia! My family eats it when we are in Malaysia and on Hari Raya. We typically have it for Breakfast in Malaysia!

Image result for ketupat rice cakeKETUPAT: Ketupat is a rice cake that is served with hot Penut sauce. But it's not the rice cake your thinking of. Its a cake made of sticky rice that is served cold with hot peanut sauce. Sometimes its served with chicken as well!

Image result for Teh TarikTEH TARIK: Teh Tarik is a drink that can be found in Malaysia. It is made from black tea and condensed milk with sugar. This drink is very sweet and probably contains a lot of calories but it's so good! I normally see Teh Tarik at night markets in Malaysia. But we also have it on Hari Raya and at family gatherings.

Friday 9 March 2018

Today we where learning how to use paragraphs properly. Mr Taylor showed us a picture that we had to get our idea for the story from. It is below the story.

It started like any other day, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, my life is mundane. I did the same thing everyday, get up, go to work, come home and go to bed. I live alone, I have no family, no friends. I guess you might think I have no social life, but I have friends… in my head.

Chipy is one of my friends, he comes to me when i’m lonely and whispers thoughts into my ear. Most of these thoughts make me sad, they make me realise how sad my life really is. “You need to go out, you don’t have any friends, no one loves you, you need to find a way to make people love you no matter the cost, you will die alone if you don’t” Most of these thoughts make me feel depressed, I cry because I think that people will not love me. All of that changed this very day.

I was driving along a wet, steep hill, when Chipy whispered a thought into my ear… “go faster, go faster, nothing wrong will happen” and was he wrong! I made my ute go even faster this time, not having a care in the world. Then Chipy told me to close my eyes, and I did. I ended up being thrown off the hill and in between the middle of these two trees.

I awoke to the haunting voice of Chipy telling me to jump, “jump out of the ute, you will be alright”. Chipy drove me to jump out of the ute. I was continuously falling. My hefty body landed on a branch, that was sticking up. It pierced my heart and blood was flowing out of my soon lifeless body. Yes, I died, but no Chipy is still here, in my head, still haunting my brain.
